more reliable in terms of communications? id be sure of it.
more reliable in terms of actual reliability? the latest crop of smartapps dont require cloud access, so they would all run locally on the little box itself.

Why not just stream Plex from your existing server over the internet?

I want some way to connect that to the TV. Ideally without sacrificing my laptop or using a web interface, as thats not remote friendly.

i think the point being, you actually can do that. hook up a Roku or something, and connect to it via your MyPlex account and do all the streaming you want.

don't I need at least a local server so the plex channel can connect to something? (Its not something I can actually test, since the roku is over WiFi and if I turn the server off there's nothing for it to connect to)

It will work remotely, you just need to configure remote access on your plex server and make sure it is working (you'll see a check mark). You just sign in with your account on the Roku and it will find the server remotely. You can even send invitations for other people to use it.

Yeah, just 32400.

You might consider looking at SharpTools for SmartThings which has a Tasker plugin. You could automate Apartment things via Tasker.

WooHoo, apartment finally approved! Getting prepped next week, i'll move in on May 1st. I'm only going to spend Monday/Tue/Wed nights there on a weekly basis, but will see if I can automate *some* creature comforts. IE, it's amazing how freaking annoying it is to need to use your hands to turn lights on/off.
No voice control? Ewww.
