actually to go one step further, there's a Horizon viewer iOS app. Could I use that app to pull up a VM running on the server, so my wife could run a full photoshop/whatever on her iPad? (In which case maybe I do want to virtualize Adobe, and run VMs on the main floor i7)

see my latest post; if I can use iOS Horizon/vmware viewer apps to pull up VMs on the host machine(s), then my needs might have just expanded. We currently have only 2 laptops that 4 of us end up fighting over. We also have one really old iPad and one newer iPad. If I can view a VM on those, I might get a dual xeon with 32-64GB of RAM soon so we can use those iPads as M$ laptops.
Stuff like that is the reason to keep cpu/RAM and data separate.

IVB Wrote:So I just realized something: If I install the VMWare viewer on my laptops, I can create a larger VM and effectively turn my "old/slow laptop" into a "faster" laptop since its just a viewer into the server. Is that right?
In which case, I really don't want to dump the $450 on upgrading an old mobo, i'll limp along as long as possible then go get a dual (or quad) xeon whenever funds are available, and go with "dumb client" laptops from now on.
big money. that's not part of what VMWare offers for free.
if you go with hyper-V, you could do it that way.

HyperVisor and money? How big is big? I'll go hunt down, getting screamed at to go to get BBQ & whiskey cocktails right now...

also, is it a different product or can I get started with the free stuff, then put in a license for that?

it's an 'add-on' product of sorts. way more than anything you'd want to pay, probably $20K to setup a small infrastructure.
hyper-V is a Microsoft competitor to VMWare.

OK that website is seriously confusing then. Looked like it was $1K for required bits. Damn. I really don't want to buy a third laptop.

yeah, i mean you can always just RDP into a machine if that's an option.

True but my last client used horizon and it was awesome. Gave new life to the iPad. I'd drop $1K in a heartbeat for the ability to VM into that but the wife has a mental block on RDP.

EDIT: Deleted the first question, found this on how to RDP: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/micros...Id=1018809)
Lets say I wanted to use it myself and give a laptop to a kid. Can I "oversubscribe" VMs to boxes, meaning:
8 physical cores available:
- VM 1 gets 3
- VM 2 gets 3
- VM 3 gets 2
- VM 4 gets 2
- VM 5 gets 2
12 total.
and just deal with slow actual performance if all 12 require CPU at the same time? And, assuming VMs 4 & 5 aren't used by anyone at any given time, would they actually take up any physical CPU/memory?
