so, I am thinking I will move the master server back to my Sage server were it originally used to live.... long ago... before moving off to be by himself...
Sage is now running on Win7, so that will mean I can download the latest & greatest CQC.... unless Dean has cruelly done to win 7 what he so cruelly did to XP... (ie end support)
once the HDD is replaced on my previous CQC Master Server, I think I might try the new Open Linux/sageV9 thing on it, see how that goes...
anyway, yet again, I have failed to make backups, but ended up unscathed as I was able to pull the bad HDD, stick it in one of those USB/HDD adapter thingies and copy off my CQC directory.... so all is good with the world, and it still rewards the lazy....

Win7 is still the baseline, so that's not a problem. Was the server on a UPS?

yes... an APC.... forgot the model, but a somewhat small one... it also stopped
working (as a UPS) a while ago... so now it is mostly just a power strip...
not overly thrilled with the quality of APC at the moment... out of 2 APC UPS units I have exactly 2 APC "power strips" and 0 working APC UPS's....
maybe I will try Tripp Lite next time...

Were the data lines protected too? Phone, cable, DSL etc? Common point of a surge entry and the circuitry isn't near as robust as the PSU.
And yeah I hate how those pesky batteries seem to need replaced right when you need the unit.

not really a surge issue, more an unplanned shutdown & a SSD that was becoming flaky decided it had enough with all these unplanned shutdowns and totally flaked out...
not really a battery issue per se on the APC's... while the batters could use replacing, their control boards went south long ago... guess they needed their own UPS?
my Belkin of the same basic vintage is still doing fine, and I suspect it is just some 'branded' no name Chinese job....

If you are using consumer UPS from APC you might have better luck with a pro model from RefurbUPS. My main UPS is a refurb APC rackmount. It came a bit scratched up and I have had to replace the batteries twice but it has been going strong for 10 years or so.
I haven't had any wild lightning surges or damage, but I do have regular overvoltage events, my incandescent light bulbs tend to have a very short lifetime.
