What's the state of mini-computers? - December 2015
#1
I've been using one of the old HP T5720 thin clients to drive a touch screen at my parents house. It won't connect to the CQC server anymore and I think it is time to upgrade the machine as it still runs Windows XP embedded.

I would like to have something even smaller than the HP for form factor. Currently the HP sits in a cabinet below the screen, but it gets pretty hot in there. I would like something small enough that I can mount it on the back of the touch screen. This would help the cooling tremendously.

I've looked at some of the options, but I thought I would through this out to the forum. Any suggestions for devices? I only need it to run CQC and web browsing really.

Thanks!

You might consider some sort of all in one as well, right? Or a tablet of some sort if you can find an appropriate mount for it. A Surface would be a cool mounted client, but I'm not sure how you'd mount it, and it would be a bit pricey for that maybe?

Or one of the PC sticks. If the current monitor has a HDMI port then you can keep it in place and just add the PC Stick to it.

I've found some android and PC AIO that work pretty well. Some of them are POE devices which makes installation a snap.

Here's a sample:

This is the first thing I thought of.

Unfortunately the current touch screen only has a vga input. Of course it could be replaced, but it works fine and fits the space.

I'm thinking something along this line would work. http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Mi3227-int...i+computer

Maybe I'll build a similar barebones unit out.

just go pick up one of those $50 Win10 tablets and use the external HDMI and USB ports. im sure you can find a creative way to attach it to the back of the monitor.

:-D

We still have a few mini-computers where I work. IBM I-Series AS400's that are going away. I might be able to snag one for you. Good news is they now run Ethernet, so you won't need to put in one of them newfangled token ring SNA networks to every room to run your CQC green screens....
