the lutron patent on instant status expires in Feb 2016, so in just a few months.

once this expires, does anyone think that the generic switches will be able to be configured to support it? i don't know if it is a configuration bit that needs set, or if it's fundamental in the firmware.

either way, there might be a glut of workable and inexpensive switches in the next half year.

It's pretty generic Z-Wave stuff, so I guess it's possible that it's there but disabled. Seems like it would more likely require a firmware upgrade or something. Any program can write to any configuration slot, so someone would have probably figure it out and enabled it already if that was the case on any widely used modules.
