Upgrade procedure
#1
Dean,

I'm about to install a new OS on my CQC master server. I'm also going to be upgrading CQC from 2.2.x to the latest version. Are there any steps I should go through to minimize headaches? My plan was to upgrade the OS on the master server, install the latest CQC as a new installation on that computer, then update my other CQC instances (a server and a standalone IV) and point it to that new master server. See anything wrong with this plan?

Thanks,

I think you would lose any templates you have with this approach. Been a while but to keep those you would have to back up your current CQC system, copy to the new OS, rerun the 2.2 installer to get it all happy and then upgrade in a couple steps. Don't think you can go from 2.2 to 4.7 directly. Might have some license issues to work out with Dean too. Sorry don't recall the interim version to get from 2.2 to current.

If you are coming from that early a CQC version, and (as I understand it) you are interested in basically moving to an auto-gen based system, I'd do what you are planning. I.e. just install all of the CQC systems fresh. One problem with upgrading the other two machines in place is that you can't go straight from 2.2 to 4.7. You'd have to install a 3.x interrim version. And you couldn't install that if the MS is on 4.7.

So, ultimately, though it's a bit of a pain, I'd start from scratch in general. You should stop CQC and copy away the directory on each machine just in case, or just let the installer do a backup for you, which is generally easier. It will offer to do so, so just give it a path to back up to and, from them on on any upgrades, just let it do another backup. Point it at a separate disc, for extra safety, in case that disc should fail at some point.

Slight correction...I'm on 4.2.x. Guess I should look at my CQC installation more often

I do plan on using the autogen stuff...now that UPB has a driver (or soon will), all of my devices are covered under V2...yay. Same advice going from 4.2?

Thanks,

From there, yeh, you can do what you were talking about. Stop the other top machines, upgrade the MS, then go back and upgrade the other two. Still, let it do backups for you.
