So, got all excited about the windows 10 free release for us 8.1'ers. Do the update config and good ol' MS says "sorry bud, your media graphics driver is not compliant". Quick run to Intel and it looks like the last update for this driver is Win7 in 2010. Argh!
If it's not one thing it's three others.

Same here. I'm using Ceton now and am itching to get away from WMC. I updated a couple of my computers to Windows 10. Seems okay.

I have successfully installed Windows 10 on two machines that failed the PC Compatibility test. They are both Intel Atom processor machines with Intel GMA 950 and GMA 3150 graphics processors.
To install Windows 10, just download the installer manually, and put it on a USB flash drive. Plug the flash drive into the machine, and run the installer.

How is the performance compared to Win7?

Guy on CT is reporting ElkRP doesn't work. So if you have an M1 I wouldn't upgrade all of your machines just yet.

Performance seems to be no worse than Win7. It has only been a few hours, and they are computers that I rarely interact with. The Atom d525 machine runs the CQC master server, so it is always on, but not connected to a screen or keyboard.
Win7's cheesy "aero glass" effects stress graphics adapters more than Win10 and Win8 with their cleaner look, so Win10 might actually be preferable to 7 on weak hardware.
When the Atom was on 7, the OS would frequently pop up a window to complain about how underpowered the graphics adapter was, and I haven't seen the complaint under 8.1 (in the last 6 months of usage) or 10 (today).

Hmmmm, I'm running a D525 Atom as well, I'll try the above recommendation for a usb install.

I went ahead with a USB update to my eeePC 1000 and it seems to work better than 7.

I just started the process on the Surface. Hopefully, if there's any hardware on the planet that is guaranteed to be happy, it would be the latest iteration of MS's own hardware, so I'm reasonably confident it'll be happy.
