Russound seems to be preferred over nuvo with DIY'ers. The nuvo GC seems common among those paying for installs. I just came across the $399 ebay option for a concerto so snapped it up just to get myself moving. We'll see where I am in fare months after I install speakers and try and get things going.
Now I need to start researching speakers; indoor and out.

FWIW, I have a Nuvo GC and it works great.
If you have the GC, I wrote a driver for the NuvoNet/NuvoMP device that lets you install your own sources, menus, and respond to keypad buttons.

I picked up a Concerto; step down from the Grand Concerto. Do you think it would work still?

Not sure - I think I've only seen references to the Grand Concerto and Essentia with the NuvoNet protocol, but maybe...

Is this what you're referencing as the music port?

Seems to be a black box while other music ports seem to be a full unit.

Yes, it is confusing because Nuvo had 2 products that were referred to as Music Ports. The black box music port that I wrote the driver for was originally intended to bridge a music collection on a PC to the Nuvo GC etc. It is also sometimes known as a NuvoNet adapter which makes more sense.
The NuvoNet adapter supports an API that allows you to provide 'sources' to the Nuvo system. Each source has its own set of menus and can display and react to button presses based on the menu context.
Here is a thread that describes the driver with some screen shots that show what is possible:
