After a
scare today about losing my entire RAID array, I have the motivation to figure out how to clone my boot disk so I don't have to deal with that.
How are you cloning your boot disk? I use Windows 7 Pro/64Bit.

Actually I use both Drive Snapshot for a disk image as well as the family plan on CrashPlan cloud backup service. CQC directories as well as multiple other computers & a server gets backed up automatically 24x7.
Crash plan has saved me multiple times now, outstanding service! Allows for both cloud as well as local to either internal or external hard drive so first point of recovery is something local. Also unlimited backup storage.

I use Drive Snapshot also and it has been great when I need to recover the whole HD cause it crashed or whatever. The only thing I don't know how to do though is do a drive recovery if I can not start Windows and then Snapshot.
For file backup I am using Acronis True Image for my data which is saved to an external drive and runs regularly to keep all my updates. I also keep a copy of my HDs at a external site, my parents, in case anything happens at my place.

What's wrong with using the built-in tools? Windows backup will let you make a full System Image + Recovery CD, and it will also perform snapshot backups. Surprisingly easy and useful. Make an Image + CD, put the snapshots on an external USB, and you should be good.
If you had the time or inclination, you could virtualize. Thats what I do, and I simply keep a copy of the PVM wherever I wish. It's a portable file, so restoring state is a simple as copying the file and loading it back into Parallels. I have a copy in my Dropbox. The same holds true for ESX.

oh, didn't know there were built in tools. Can they do a full restore, or is it some jury-rigged thing?

The built-in tools can do a full 'system state' restore, as well as incremental style data backups. It works surprisingly well.

Need to do this too. My laptop has been shutting down a lot lately - always at night, so I couldn't figure out the issue. Spend hours trawling through logs.
Finally did it to me last week during the day. It got red hot, then just shut down. About to google hot laptops! But I also need to move my CQC (again!) - finally bought a small desktop computer to use as a server rather than a laptop.

Obviously it is overheating and the heat protection system is shutting down the computer. There are some things to look for.....
1) Is the air flow into or out of the laptop blocked or restricted? This happens a lot if you lay the laptop down on a blanket or other loose or squishy surface - especially if your vents are on the bottom of the computer.
2) Is the fan working? Fans are known to go bad and depending on the laptop, they may be easy to replace.
3) Is there lint or other stuff collecting in the computer. You'll need to take the case off to check, but many times the computer will collect dust and lint over time inside the computer which will restrict the air flow.
Those are common issues that are generally easy to fix. Hopefully that is all that is wrong.

1) No - before I had proof, I suspected from the logs (abruptness in shutting down, and googling some things) that it was a heat issue, so I made sure that it was clear of all debris and had space to 'breathe'.
2) Yes
3) I think this is the issue. I bought one of the can air spray things, and for a few weeks I had stability again, but now I've had two crashes this week already. I think the laptop needs to be opened up and cleaned.
Thanks for the suggestions!
