Serial Server help needed
#1
I am trying to config my Digi Portserver II 16 and I am not sure what settings to do for controlling my equipment...

In the config setup they list:
1: Terminal Config with RealPort
2: Terminal Config using Autoconnect
3: Terminal Config using RealPort
4: Dial out PPP connection to a Host
5: Dial out PPP Network-to-Network connection
6: Dial in using Radius
7: PPP dial in without Radius
8: Frame Relay Connection
9: Dial in PPP Connection and Proxy ARP

Here is a part from the config example...
Configuration set config ip=190.250.150.10
submask=255.255.255.0 ..........................(1)
set ports range=2-3 dev=term
set line range=2-3 baud=9600
set flow range=2-3 ixon=on ixoff=on ..............(2)
set ports range=4-5 dev=mio
set line range=4-5 baud=115200
set flow range=4-5 ixon=off ixoff=off
rts=on cts=on ...................................(3)
set user name=user1 ...............................(4)
set ports range=15 dev=prn
set line range=15 baud=9600
set flow range=15 ixon=on ixoff=on ................(5)
Configuration Notes 1. The set config command configures the IP address and mask
for PortServer II’s Ethernet interface.
2. The first set ports, set line, and set flow commands
configure ports 2 and 3 for terminal connections.
3. The next set ports, set line and set flow commands
configure the ports for bidirectional modems. Software flow control
(the default) is explicitly shut off and hardware flow control turned
on using the set flow command.
4. The set user command defines a user, which assigns a user name
for login purposes. All PortServer II users can login with this name.
Because no password is defined (see the newpass command), the
user name functions as a password as well.
5. This set ports, set line and set flow commands configure
port 15 for a printer using software flow control.

Since I have 16 ports would I set it to ports 2-16?

I can get this all config'd if I could understand what I need to know. Please help me get this up and going.

When I get this going I will give my other Digi Portserver to whoever helps me get this going. I also have 2 Digi serial server PCI cards that I will not need.

Ron

I have the Etherlite 16, but use the realport setup on a WinXP server. I first ran a program called DgIpServ.exe that allowed me to set the IP addy for the Etherlite 16. Once I did that, then I installed the Realport software on my server computer. That gave me the 16 ports. I had to go into the settings within the Device Manager for a few of the devices and configure based on latency, etc.

Let me know if you need more info. Mine has been working flawlessly since I adjusted settings within Device Manager.

Did you install modem inf files when you did the install?

No - Just ran the exe file to set the IP address, then ran the realport software, and it set up all the connections. Since you have a newer version, it may have more bells and whistles than I have.

I think mine might be older as it won't detect it with the software.

Hurry up. I have a PortServer 4 coming in a few days and I'll be leeching whatever this thread has to offer Smile

...I'll help when mine shows up if you don't have it by then.

I just noticed while installing the Digi Realport software....

There are several settings under default Network Profile.

TCP: Typical settings
TCP: Modified Read/Write
TCP: Less Overhead
TCP: Low Overhead/No Deltas
UDP: Serial Data Only

I have been using the default one... TCP: Typical settings.

I am wondering if I should have been using one of the others... specifically UDP: Serial Data Only.

Well, my portserver TS 4 arrived today and I kinda got it working. As far as data passing, that works. Reliability is another issue.

Anyway, I just went into the web config on the portserver and set it each port to the baud rate of the device. The profile I used was TCP socket.

I installed the realport software. Nothing really interesting happened with that part. Just click through a wizard.

Are you sure your problem isn't the RJ45 to DB9 conversion? I fiddled with that for 2 hours until it finally clicked what was wrong. After that the first thing I did was connect a device to port 1 on the portserver and telnet to port 2001. Once I was sure data was passing through I started with the realport software.

I just ordered 2 cables to find out if it is a cable. I hope to have them sometime next week. Is your portserver discoverable? Mine is the older II and is not discoverable, so I cannot do the webserver config. I have everything configured now as serial... Once I get the cables I will try it again and if it still doesn't work I will try the TCP settings. I saw where someone in the Digi forums actually used the printer settings and I believe they got it to work without the PC being on. They are controlling it with a HA device. I tried to contact them but I have had no response.

I bought some cat5 to serial connectors for $1.50 each and connected the pins. How much are digi cables?

No, mine is not discover-able. I double clicked on the line in realport and typed in my IP.

Oh, did you make sure you have the latest firmware? When I got mine it has some nasty web interface. Once I upgraded the firmware it was quite a bit nicer. Mine was from ebay.

Tonight I might spend time trying to figure out why my alarm doesn't work correctly with it. So far my UPBPIM seems fine. (I currently have 2x serial devices).
