Any sign of a Win8 tile yet ?
#1
With my Microsoft Surface Pro on its way, I am looking again at my NewUI templates. I have already made a custom tile with static image to launch the CQC house controller, but it would be really nice to have a dynamic tile that can be updated by actions in the event server.

I still think that the best approach would be to create it as a Device Driver, with a few write only fields for image url's and the 3 lines of text that can be changed. Varying the number of lines and the text size would be a bonus. There are tile development kits on the Microsoft web site in C, c++, XML to allow updating a tile by TCPIP so it should not be too difficult.

Maybe if enough people express an interest, Dean could have a look at this once he surfaces from all the low level stuff he has been doing recently.

Would you have to have the "Pro"?

I was just thinking the same thing this week.

Not so much for the pro, but RT on the MS tablet. Would be a nice handheld remote to complete against the iPad.

Also, we need to get something going for Windows Phone.

As it stands you need the Surface Pro as it runs full Win8 so you can just use a normal CQC client. To run CQC on the Surface, someone would have to write a RIVA client as win8RT app, and I don't think that on anyone's agenda.

It's not that RT is not on our agenda, we just aren't in a position to do it at the moment.

I thought that the "standard" program could be re-compiled for RT using MS' new compiler - something like that anyway.

Regarldess, as a dedicated interface device, the Pro is too much money. The RT would be a great iPad alternative.

No, unfortunately, as with iOS and CE and Android, even with the advances in performance these days, the vendors of these products still feel that they need to create a separate OS instead of a more scalable primary OS product.

It's understandable I guess, since having that scalable an OS is probably a pretty brutal undertaking, but the price paid for not doing it is very high as well. OTOH, if you are trying to create a new desktop and app paradigm, I guess that's one way to make it happen, by not supporting the old apps. Doing so will end up getting you into a "neither this nor that" situation, which some folks have complained about with full Windows 8 I guess.
