I think that the issue is that there are two versions of the task scheduler API. Version 1 is supported on XP, but not later versions, and version 2 is supported on later versions but not XP. I'm using V2, so probably it just fails to do anything on XP. It probably also gives an error in the uninstaller when it tries to remove any existing scheduled task.
I think that, given that XP is moving now inexorably towards old age, for the time being anyway I'm just not going to support that type of auto-start on XP and will just grey out that option, and you can just put it in the Startup folder the old fashioned way if you want auto-start. If time permits I'll look at supporting it on XP as well.
