SMS with ifttt
#1
So I thought I had it all figured out.... Used my CQC server to send a message to mynumber@txt.att.net. ATT converts this to a text and sends you an sms with the content.

That worked great, so I decided to assign a special text tone so I could tell it was something from my server. Oops, forgot that ATT increments their sending from 'phone number'. Something to do with tracking replies etc.

Bummer, I suppose I could live without the unique ring, but by golly when you get a plan in place and you can't do it, it just frustrates you. I mean, we can put a man on the moon so why can't we.... blah, blah blah.

So I decided to finally try http://www.ifttt.com

Set up a quick trigger (#Trash), yes I'm tracking my trash because I miss too many trash days and they come around about 6:30 am. Defined an event in CQC with the trigger in the email header and voila! About a minute after sending the test email, I get a text with my nice Sherwood Forest ring tone.

Yes, I could probably create a calendar event on trash nights and it would be much simpler. But, does my calendar know if I've already taken the trash out? Nope, sure doesn't. It's going to sound off each and every time. However, CQC will know because I'm installing RFID chips on my trash cans.

Took me all of about 15 minutes to create an account and figure out how to setup an email to sms trigger.

Now I'm thinking of all kinds of triggers I can use via SMS.

Okay so I just tried this and way better then sending an e-mail to text to my phone. Like you said the phone company increments a number so you can not do a custom ringtone. Also on my phone I get a msg:
'You have mail from ... Please reply with Read to read your message.'

That does not work at all. With IFTTT it now sends me a SMS msg and I know what it is without having to open my Messages app or reply to it. Now I get:
CQC
Buglar Alarm, Front Door opened at Thu January 31, 2013 - 05:10PM

CQC is who I labeled as from. I just wish you could do enters so it is not all on 1 line.

Thanks rtarver. What other fun things did you do with IFTTT?

I'm finally looking at ifttt since it is key for my Pebble (when will it ship! ACK!). I guess I need to figure out how to make CQC work for email, I never did get that to work. Use both gmail and hotmail...

1420 Pebbles shipped this week. Unless you backed early though, you're looking at next month.

Worse - I ordered Orange. They're manufacturing the Black orders first.

I was #42K, but in reality I could be in the final shipment as orange wasn't popular.

Too bad Pebble doesn't have Wi-Fi. I don't keep my phone with me and the watch loses connectivity if its not near the phone.

P.S. I also setup the IFTTT SMS relay and I'm getting e-mail-sms from CQC now, but I can't think of anything other than security alarms worth sending...

how about using wuench's network monitor to ping cell phones, if reachable, then home, send text... There would have to be some conrol logic around this obviously so you don't get flooded with texts.

I have Tasker for Android (rule-based engine), its got a location-based sensor that uses GPS or celltowers. I could set it up for proximity based rules (when I drive through one of the two roads I take getting home) and if its less than X degrees, turn up heat, make me a cup of coffee, lay the newspaper out, and start up a warm bath for me.

Ok, perhaps that latter part was a bit too much Dudley Moore's Arthur.

Have you figured out a way for CQC to be the "that"?

IE, If <THIS outside CQC happens> THEN <do THAT within CQC>
