I'm not sure I understand that. These tag thingies are set up to send commands to his phone when they are tapped? Wouldn't it just be vastly easier to have a program on the phone itself that would do these commands?

It's basically a triggering device, but you write the commands on the actual NFC tag.

You could possible use tasker and a shortcut, but that would require a user to turn the phone on and find the correct shortcut to enable it. With a NFC tag, you simply swipe the phone over the tag and it will run your macro automatically. That means it is easier and quicker to use.
