Overview of SIP protocol:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Ini...n_Protocol
excerpt: SIP is an IETF-defined signaling protocol widely used for controlling communication sessions such as voice and video calls over Internet Protocol (IP). The protocol can be used for creating, modifying and terminating two-party (unicast) or multiparty (multicast) sessions. Sessions may consist of one or several media streams.
Other SIP applications include video conferencing, streaming multimedia distribution, instant messaging, presence information, file transfer and online games

I'd love to see this as a feature. I think the basic options you need are:
Call a specific Station
Call all stations
Video Call (this should be an option that allows you to escalate a call that is in progress to add video)
Automatically mute the audio in the room being called
Ability to use existing Speakers and cameras for the intercom.
It should also be possible to use the Riva Client to allow mobile devices to function as an intercom station.

I ordered a couple books to help me start spinning up on this stuff. I guess some beneficial side effects of this would also be that, once this is done, it would also allow probably for CQC to be able to call you and deliver notifications (based on triggered events watching for things you are interested in.) And to be able to be a phone itself presumably, given some sort of SIP enabled PBX in your home (hardware or software), right?

Dean,
It is great to see such a quick response like this in CQC to a request made in a different forum none the less. I am not sure the two were related, but I will just assume so so I feel like I did something productive that day!
I would agree with the others that you should consider the SIP route. Regardless of the other benefits (and there are a lot) I believe SIP is a natural fit into your knowledge base and a logical step as the country slowly changes to VOIP vs the old telecom lines.
SIP also makes dealing with video and sound the same ballgame vs two separate games.
Good luck.

Does this also open the box for voice commands?

Not really, no. Voice command is mostly about speech to text conversion. This stuff is all about keeping it in the (encoded) audible form and sending it around.

I haven't started (yet) my CQC journey but what is the difficulty of an intercom system when you have the right hardware?
Correct me if I am wrong:
I have 2 AP800, touchscreens in every room, mics in every room and a zone-based audio system.
The AP800's have the ability of knowing wich mic was activated and allow for a two-way conversation.
So, theorethicaly, I would only need to activate an 'intercom' function on the touchscreen and I would be talking and listening to the whole house (or specific room). I could even walk the whole house talking to another walking individual with no problem.
Isn't that so?

Yeh, in that case that would be true. What folks are wanting here I think is a 'soft intercom', i.e. no hardware needed other that mics at the speaking points, and using IP to transmit and distribute the audio. And, as I get the SIP/SDP/RTPC bits done, it would mean you could pull out your cell phone and call up a special address and be speaking out the intercom system.
