Template / Overlay design for mobile device - Seeking experience input
#1
taRIVA is coming along very well, thanks Fonceur for your hard work!!! I am now at a point where I want to design my template architecture for my android phone and am brainstorming on how to approach this, I know this ends up being what I (my wife;-) )prefers, but was wanting to draw on existing experience with other users who have worked through this. So this is both a philosophical design approach question as well as a technical, how to best do this (I'm a real noob with template overlays, been spending the bulk of my time on the automation & device plumbing)

  1. One approach is to have room tabs across the top of the screen to switch overlays and then potential have a 2nd set of tabs across the bottom of the room overlay to select room function. This does eat up some screen real estate.
  2. A second approach, which I have seen more examples of is to have the main menu where you select your room and then manage what is available in the room, this is a variation of #1 but leaves out the immediate access to any room
  3. A third approach (I'll probably do this one regardless for "administrative management" is to have function tabs across the top to manage each automated device, security, HVAC, A/V, etc.
On smaller devices like an iPhone or other handheld, what have you decided was the most user friendly UI that allowed you to control your environment most effectively?

The technical question is how to architect the overlays to flow properly.

Thanks!

As we were discussing the taRIVA client Fonceur had great suggestion regarding this

Make a template 350x480 (or 320x510), with the off screen strip containing your navigation, so you just swipe the template to access it

I really like this, keeps the main screen clear of navigation!

Or take it to the next level with bottom/right navigation with a 350x510 templates for a 320x480 screen.

This way your home template (350x510) has a main overlay (320x510) where all the info about a topic will be displayed. The templates loaded in the main overlay would have their own 320x480 overlay and contain the navigation at the bottom (320 x 30 like say current/forecast for a weather template). The 30x480 area on the right would have your topic selection like weather/lighting/hvac/etc.
Code:
-------------------------------
|                    |   HVAC  |
|                    |---------|
|                    | Weather |
|                    |---------|
|      Main          | Lights  |
|     overlay        |---------|
|                    | Music   |
|                    |---------|
|                    | Video   |
| - - - - - - - - - -|---------|
| Current | Forecast |\/\/\/\/\|
-------------------- ----------
Field Generator 0.65: Create CQC fields on the fly, from external applications.
Mobile templates 0.4: Main resolution of 320x480 with navigation side bars (384x544).
Sage Media Server 1.1.3 + Sage Player 2.7.8: Display and manipulate SageTV information or player.
TaRIVA 1.26: Android RIVA client.

And here's my first stab at what I meant... The light gray area being hidden, and only used to navigate after a swipe.
