Actually, I wanted to do this after I replaced my AC unit a couple years ago. They were perfectly clear -- you will burn out your motor if you close a zone off that it isn't designed for. I imagine you could add a pressure sensor if you knew someone that could tell you what those points are, but I don't know anyone. Also, many bigger air handlers have multi-speed fans. If yours can be controlled more than on/off, that could solve your problem. I remember considering two smaller units vs. the large unit I have when I did the replacement but costs stopped that. I wish I had in the long run.

Hmm, the Aprilaire 6504 system owner's manual clearly states
Quote:With a Zone Control System, some form of pressure relief must be designed into the system to assure proper operation and reduce the possibility of noise due to airflow. The method of pressure relief that has been desined into your system could include use of a bypas damper or the Aprilaire method of controlled pressure relief. With the controlled pressure relief method, a predetermined amount of air is allowed to pass through a closed damper. The amount of air that is passed by each damper (the bypass) is not enough to cause a noticeable temperature change in a non-calling zone, but is enough to relieve the higher system pressures.
So, if you feel small amounts of air entering into a non-calling zone, what you are feeling is the bypass air. Remember this bypass is normal and provides pressure relief for the system without causing a noticeable change in tmperature within that zone.
Very interesting.

Does the 8870 run with 6504's, or does it need 6404's? I see members here talking about 6504's with 8870's, but the Aprilaire site says 8570's with 6504's?

i found it easier to get my hvac system setup than to get triggered events working with TTS/CQC
