just curious, IVB posted in another thread that he needs to restart his all the time, so who else using it and how reliable has it been?
I would rate my experience with it as Mostly Flawless... since I have it lock up, but only under very specific circumstances... ie if the server side (running the Lantronix thing) loses connection with the remote dohicky (in my case a GC-100) it will 'lock up' and stop working requiring the CQC MS to be reset...
and the only way it loses connection is if the power goes away for either the GC-100 or the switch...
NOTE: As one wise professional something once stated, I am ignorant & childish, with a mindset comparable to 9/11 troofers and wackjob conspiracy theorists. so don't take anything I say as advice...
I've been using it on a XP machine for connection to a GC100 serial port and it's locked-up on me on once or twice within the last 2 months. Not flawless performance but not to bad either.

I voted mostly flawless as it's just the 1 device type on 1 of the serial servers giving me a hard time. I connected that serial server to the 2ndary panel, the main server controls the other 2 serial servers. Those 2 are working perfectly, I *never* restart that service.
It might be a faulty serial server, or the method of cxn, or might be the device type. I dunno, it's not very simple for me to change any of those variables due to how the wiring is setup in my house.

I am not sure if you are trying to guage the stability of the Lantronix software only or the reliability of a device server.
I have a Digi Etherport terminal server - 32 serial ports and it has not missed a beat in a couple of months. I know of another user as well who has not had any problems with the Digi either. We are not using the Lantronix software either - we are using the Realport drivers for it from Digi.

I can't speak for Lantronix, but at work we have a handful of Quatech remote serial ports, which haven't missed a beat for around 2 years. So I've now got one at home as well.

The Quatech stuff is generally pricey but high quality.

to be honest, I am not really sure about what I am trying to do either:oops:...
I just saw a post from IVB in another thread where he claimed to have some issues with the lantronix, ie:

and I just became curious on what its like out in the real world...

The IRA-3 (as with the IRMan it emulates) would be unusual in that it uses toggles of a control line as a 'hello' type of thing. This is a timing sensitive thing, so I can see how that could be iffy via a virtual serial port thing. There maybe be settings that makes it more aggressive about propogating such changes in control lines.

Correct, it is generally pricey when compared to other alternatives. But in the context of the amount of money that is invested in the majority of HA installations, its but a drop in the ocean. And if spending $300 on a device instead of $100 means that reliability (and hence WAF) increases, its worth it. Now if it was the choice between spending $800 or $8000, the result may be different..

The device (Lantronix) itself is rock solid. I've been using Lantronix on jobs for years and in my own home for 2.5 years without a single lock up. Ever. I've also used SENA hello devices as well with ZERO issues. Now, in all fairness, they've been controlled via a system other than CQC but my point is that the Lantronix servers themselves are VERY, VERY stable.
