I notice right away that the cheaper unit does not have the distance capacity of the more expensive unit. So there is probably a quality difference in parts. But if you are not needing to send the signal out more than 150ft, I think the cheaper unit is probably fine.
I have not used the VGA extender from this seller, but I have used a couple USB only extenders (which sell for even less). I have been very pleased with the quality. The cases are metal and overall seem to be good quality. I like them more than the USB extenders I got from Cyberguys which were more expensive and plastic. Those Cyperguy extenders also got fried - I'm not saying it wasn't my fault, but the units from Mr. Chen the e-bay seller are still functioning fine.
Also, I am not sure if he will recommend using a power supply or not. The auction does not include one. When I bought my 1 port USB extender it wasn't needed. But I just bought a 4 port USB extender and he recommended that I use it so that if I was using USB powered devices, it would pull from the PS. It was an extra $6 so I bought it.
I see on the specs for the KVM extender, they do list a power supply. I would e-mail him and ask him if it is required or not. But still the total cost will be well below what you had considered before.
