I'm still an HVAC controller newb, so help me out here....
If I want CQC control of my HVAC system, then besides that 8870, I still need the protocol module, right, which is another $100 or thereabouts? Is that all? And finally..I know Aprilaire is deeply admired in most HA communities, but are there cheaper methods of HVAC control I could consider as well? I am grateful you posted this, btw...I just want to see what my options are before spending some more of my HA money...

Yes you still need the 8811 adapter. Yes, there are other cheaper thermo's that are automatable. RCS is one.

Thanks! I successfully avoided yet one more impulse buy...(though it would have been nice to hand the thermostat to the HVAC guy and he could install it directly instead of me having to replace it. oh well)

My HT equipment I want to control by CQC (some day hopefully) Yamaha CX-A5100, Dune HD pro 4k, Dune HD Pro 4k plus, ISY 994i, LG 86" 4k FP, and a projector in the future ellisr63 Wrote:eBay... I think I just saw some last night for around $100. Maybe...What you probably saw were the X-10 versions. The RS485 versions are usually double in price. I did see a couple of complete auctions for the TR-16 at around $80....That's rare and a great deal.
Is a TR-16 all I'd need? It communicates and everything? I have a heatpump system...is that all I need to know?
Edit: And those TR-16 auctions were for a used one, by the way.

I also have a heat pump, and my system is a "two stage" will this thermo (aprilaire) work with my stuff?
