1. Is there any reason to step up from the 12 inch unit to the 18 inch? I can simply use brackets to mount the 12 inch in a rack can I not?
2. Are there ever any deals on these on ebay or elsewhere?
3. Is there anything that does what the GC-100 does for a better price?
4. Could one build something that does what the GC-100 does?
Possible more efficient searching could have led to these answers, but there's so much to learn and so little time to do it.
Thanks,
Target

1. Is there any reason to step up from the 12 inch unit to the 18 inch? I can simply use brackets to mount the 12 inch in a rack can I not?The would be no real eason unless you neded more relays and ports. As for placing it in the rack, just place it on a shelf. It is so small and light weight, the brackets would be heavier than the unit.
2. Are there ever any deals on these on ebay or elsewhere? Some times on EBay, but not often. Also very few deals that I have seen.
3. Is there anything that does what the GC-100 does for a better price? There are other units that do IR control as well, but they do not have serial ports. THe ports are not supported by CQC, but still available. The GC100 is rock solid once configured. The company has stuck behind the product with very few changes, and thus the reason it never goes on sale.
4. Could one build something that does what the GC-100 does? No

My understanding was that the 12 inch and 18 inch were identical to the 18 inch in terms of ports offered. Is there some difference between the two that I'm not aware of?

Yes; additional card slots are available. You can slide in an additional relay card, but this is not officially supported. They made the unit very modular for future expansion and made the 18" case for the rack environment.

I have a GC-100-12 that I am no longer using and was going to post in the Buy/Sell forum. I bought it for IR control in a second room but ended up with all serial controllable devices, so it has seen minimal use.
If you are interested, PM me.

that isn't entirely true...
If Target is an EE and a software developer, and he has the tools and resources, I am positive he could build an equivalent product... ;-)
of course, development costs being what they are, that first unit would be exceedingly expensive... but still it is technically doable...
of course, I just bought a GC-100 as it was much cheaper and easier then rolling my own...:-)
NOTE: As one wise professional something once stated, I am ignorant & childish, with a mindset comparable to 9/11 troofers and wackjob conspiracy theorists. so don't take anything I say as advice...
