Instead of a "wake up" button, he could just set it to automatically wake up either at sunrise, or a specific time of day, right?

Yup, and then shut off when the alarm is set, all sorts of time when essentially we just are not home. It's annoying to have to start the thing and wait, but at the same time that is a lot of electricity wasted when you are sleeping 6-7 hours a day, and at work for 8.
