It's also the electronics in them, for noise cancelling and echo cancelling and stuff like that. The Echo does pretty good at that, though some of that may come from the much smarter DNN based back end.

Dean,
Any chance of Alexa returning just what was said after they have processed it? We could use that as input into CQCVoice. They certainly do a great job of extracting what you say from the ambient sound.

No, if they allowed that, they'd have all kinds of folks piggy-backing off of their stuff. They want to keep that for themselves.
