Basic CML question

Not enough to worry about really. Do whatever you find most readable/maintainable.

This is a good lesson for new programmers.

More efficient is not always best. You can write code in a single line but need a PHD to be able to decipher what it is doing. Alternatively you can write the same code over many lines and even a novice can work it out.

Come back to your code 12 months or more later and it is guaranteed that you wont remember what you were thinking so keep it simple and clear and don't for get to add comments and a few more comments. I find I end up with almost 1:1 of code to comments lately as I start putting comments in for everything.
