MQTT is just getting bigger and bigger.

A C-bus MQTT bridge also exists now.

Lora (IoT WAN) uses MQTT.

From what I have read of the docs, MQTT is not so difficult either.

Huge amount of ESP8266 & ESP32 and Arduino projects are using MQTT

Sonoff (esp8266 based power switching) uses MQTT with firmware updates (everyone does the firmware update - thats why they are so popular).

I'm sure the list goes on and on for MQTT
