when i do the 3.08 upgrade from 2.4 it says "no previous installation was found" and when i select Find i get

an unhandled exception occured during dialog box processing

and the details are

Could not do the gradient fill

Not enough storage is available to process this command.

i have 40GB free on the C drive which i am installing from and to.

It's talking about video memory, not hard drive memory, and it seems likely that the error is bogus in some way. You may want to download the installer zip again. Some folks have managed to get it corrupted in ways that cause strange errors.
