Also trying to get some type of weather data back here now that WU has stopped...  Don't see UV index, wind speed or "feel like" temps with OWM.  That's going to be problematic for the irrigation controller and well just kind of sucks from an overall weather picture.  Hoping we can find something else with more info or determine if just buying a WU weather station will work longer term.

After reading the WU forum comments, it sounds like they have a new API, and the people with the PWS will go offline using the old API on March 22nd, but have access to the data with the new API.  If that is true, then we would need a new driver for the new API if we were to purchase a PWS to continue getting free data.

What was unclear to me, however, was weather you would get the forecast data or not.  Some indicated they would only be able to get their own PWS data through the API, which is so stupid because they already have that.

I could be wrong on all of this, but that is how I interpreted it reading the forum comments.

Yeh, that would be a killer deal. Give us free data, and we'll give you your data back for free (with network interruptions thrown in as a bonus.)

OK, thanks for that info.  I guess it may be worth waiting it out until it's clearer after they make that change and what's still available for data etc.

At minimum a personal weather station could give what's needed for the irrigation controller I guess and then forecast could come from the other source.  Although that seems like a bad deal as Dean mentioned...

OK, so the reason the OWM driver only does 3 forecast days is that they don't really offer five actual days. They provide a time period that covers 5 days, but it doesn't start on day boundaries. So you can only be sure to have 3 full day's worth of actual data. Without that you won't get valid high/low info and such, since the samples for the first/last day often won't cover the periods where those occur.

Now, I may have misinterpreted how the data is represented. But I remember now looking at the data coming back and it appeared to me to just about each 3 hour slice, even the low/high values. So, there might only be 1 slice left for today when the driver connects to the server, so it would have a really skewed view of the world. It would be really complicated to try to work around this issue.

Is there any chance of getting an updated WU driver? I have a PWS and I got a new key for the new api. It says it's valid for another year so not sure beyond that. But according to docs I should be able to get 5 days of forecast. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eKCn...8qpE_gArAY

Looking at the API for weather forecast (https://goo.gl/QBN6Rc) I tried this:

and I got:

I have made some drivers in the past, but I imagine it should be a "minor" Smile change to the existing driver?

I couldn't do it since I don't have a working account anymore. Feel free to give it a shot. Do they still have an XML version of the data? That's JSON and the driver is written for the XML version of the old stuff. It would likely be a much shorter row to hoe if you stuck with the XML. Though, if they changed it a lot it could still be a good bit of work.

Any chance of a darsky wether driver?

Sadly, no. That's been discussed a lot. They don't allow individual licenses. That's explicitly forbidden in the terms of use. They are really just oriented towards companies who have their own servers and their customers go to those servers for the data. We aren't set up for that sort of thing, and we'd have to charge for it which we also aren't set up for. Otherwise we'd have to embed our license key in our driver, which would get compromised within 15 seconds of posting that release and our account would get shut down for over-use.

Of course feel free to contact them and complain about this. If enough folks do, maybe they'll relent and allow for individuals to buy an access key.

Or someone could just write their own driver to use with their own API key so long as they keep it to until 1,000 requests per day.

Yeh, that's obviously doable.
