Official 4.7 Beta discussion thread
#1
This thread is for discussion of the 4.7 beta releases, leading up to version 4.7. There was previously a 5.0 thread, because initially we thought we'd be doing a 5.0, but ultimately it's going to be 4.7 I'm pretty sure. A good bit of what was going go into it ended up going into 4.6 anyway. So it won't be big enough to justify calling 5.0 in and of itself. Really we should have made the 4.5 release a 5.0 version, since it was enormous, but we didn't, so we'll stick to 4.x for now.

The primary goal for this release is an HTML5 client. We've already implemented Websockets support in the Web Server. It only currently supports non-secure connections, but the bulk of the work is already done and it works fine for non-secure uses.

So we'll be moving forward on secure connection support, on which a good bit of work has been done. It also requires support for persistent HTTP socket connections which has already been done. Then we'll start on an HTML5 client that supports the auto-generation type functionality, i.e. it won't be customizable yet, it will just be driven by room configuration info initially.

We will likely do some other things as well, among them are:
  • More V2 Drivers. We will continue to convert more drivers to V2 mode. The V2 device class interfaces are pretty well defined now, so less time can be spent on the mechanics of V2 and more on the actual implementation of drivers to support it.
  • Monitors. That's probably not the ultimate name it'll have, but I have to call it something. There's always been a need for something halfway between a device driver and a triggered event. I.e. a CML class that runs continuously, but isn't itself a driver. It's something designed to watch other drivers and do things in response. Some things currently implemented as drivers would be much better as these things, such as JKish's irrigation scheduler, and it would allow for other things to be done that currently aren't optimal as either a driver or a scheduled/triggered event.

Other, smaller things will almost certainly be done, but if we got the above done, that would be a heaping good amount for a 4.7 release.

OK, now that 4.6 is out, I'll get back to the ISY driver again. I'm sure, now that 4.6 is out and folks who don't do betas start upgrading I'll have to deal with this or that and get a 4.6.1 followup out, but I should have time now to finish the ISY driver off.

I just tried installing the latest release, and I get this...

Is this an error or did something go wrong with my previous install?

Try downloading it again. Once in a while this happens and it gets corrupted but still unzips ok. Given it another try and let me know if it still causes an issue. I'll download it as well just in case.

I just downloaded it and it ran ok for me, so it probably just got corrupted during download or something.

Oh, wait, it's trying to find the 4.5 version of something, so you've got something whacked. Remove that directory altogether and then download it again and unzip it into that directory. You might have had some old stuff hanging around or something. You definitely seem to be running the wrong version of the installer. This could of course 'splain some of the weirdness you have seen in the past since in many cases the older stuff might still semi- but not completely correctly work if it happened to get picked up. So if you've just been unzipped into the same directory over previous stuff, probably best not to do that and remove the directory and create it again just to be safe.

Did anything happen with a plex/xbmc media repo?
#9
I'll look into it once I get some other things done. I still have to get the encrypted Websockets support done and get a good start on the HTML5 client. Once I get there, I'll feel more comfortable then starting to take some side time to look at some other drivers and such.
