Windows 7 64-bit install failing

I am not having any luck installing CQC onto a Windows 7 64-bit (Home Premium) machine. I have been able to try it on an XP machine, but my target machine is running Win 7, so I'd like to get it running there.

The Windows Firewall is turned off on the machine, and I am not running any other firewall or anti-virus packages.

I follow the instructions in the tutorial video, using a cmd.exe launched with "Run as administrator".

The installer runs correctly up to the screen for entering the admin password. After I enter the password I get an error dialog from "Charmed Quark Controller Installer" which informs me "The CQC background services could not be contacted by the installer."

Clicking Details shows me:

CID0rbUC 6003/0/0
Failed Not Found
CIDOrbUC_ThisFacility.cpp/583
Could not contact the CIDLib Name Server (at 192.168.49.100:13502)


Afterwards, trying "net start cqcappshell" results in:

The service is not responding to the control function.


Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem, and get CQC installed on the Win7 machine?

This problem has shown up for various people and the reason for it is not understood. It's a 64 bit thing somehow, but CQC shoudln't be affected by this because it's a 32 bit system and should run in a 32 bit environment under 64 bit Windows. But obviously something is different and the service won't start up. I don't have a 64 bit development environment in order to try and diagnose this problem, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to look into it.

In the meantime, if you move to 32 bit Windows 7 it should be Ok. Some folks I think have dealt with it by creating a virtual machine under 64 bit Windows, but I'm not sure of the ins and outs of that.

How long does the installer take to start? Does it fire up immediately, or do you need to wait a minute or so before it starts doing its thing?

I had troubles installing on Win7 x64 as well. Eventually I solved it by increasing my ServicesPipeTimeout and starting the CQC service manually.

It takes a while for the installer to get started. While watching the tutorial video for installation, I notice that the installer on my machine has some long delays that do not happen in the video.

It's both a mysterious problem and an inconsistently mysterious one. Someone just ask for a new license for their new Win7 64 bit server that they moved CQC to and it was working just fine for hm. Those are always the worst ones because, even if I get a 64 dev environment here, odds on it will work fine for me and I won't be able to figure out what's going on.

After 3.4 gets out, maybe a couple of folks who have having this problem can run some highly verbose versions for me, to see if we can figure out what's going on.

Adding ServicesPipeTimeout to the registry (it was not present) and setting the value to 120000 yields success. (A value of 60000, which might be the default, fails.)

"The CQC Application Shell service was started successfully."

And CQCNetTest shows success for all tests.

Running the installer still gives an error after I provide the password. But then manually starting with "net start cqcappshell" works.

I think that installer will only wait 30 seconds and then figures it's never going to work since it should never take even remotely that long.
