I have been asked a few times for a list of modems that are Caller ID capable, so I thought I would start this thread as a place where people can post the make and model of modems that are known to work with Caller ID.
I have added a test procedure from the CallerID documentation that can be used to check a modem that you might already have. Also if you intend to go out and buy one, don't pay any more than around $5. There are plenty of old modems that will do Caller ID that no one wants because they are slow. So to begin, the modem that I use is a; US Robotics 5630 External. Perhaps we should all highlight the modem in our posts in red to make it easier to scan the list. Cheers Rohan Modem test procedure

Once you come up with a blessed list, I'll put it in the driver documentation page.

I've been looking at caller id for a long time. The problem is that there are so many options out there. Tying up a serial or slot for each line seems like such overkill although it is nice that you can do this for really cheap. One of the boxes I've been looking at is from yes-tele. They have 2, 4 and 8 line options that track inbound and outbound calls. Now, I have little interest in tracking outbound calls (except the fax line) but the ability a single USB or serial port for all the lines is nice.
I found another device a month or so ago. I believe it was a USB device that only did caller id. It was cheap (around $10ea). I apparently didn't save the link and I know I saw one on eBay somewhere. I saw one on eBay and I toyed with ordering one. There also was a 10 or 12 pack. I'll have to search more. Last edited by zaccari : 10-01-2006 at 02:43 PM. |

I found it. The Net Caller ID still requires a com port so it doesn't make it better than the modem concept. Bummer.

I'm using the driver as ships with 1.6.21 --
The "BCM V.90 56K" PCI internal modem supports both : AT#CID=1 and AT+VCID=1 This provides from my cell phone calling in as per hyperterminal: DATE=mmdd TIME=hhmm // in 24 hour format NAME=Last^First^Middle_initial // (^=Space) This seems to be the name on the billing account NMBR=aaaPPPssss // where aaa=area code, PPP=prefix, ssss=Suffix FWIW, the command AT+VCID=2 or AT#CID=2 gives a: MESG^=^85 character Hex string when a call comes in.

I can easily see myself running out of pci slots, and am considering using a usb modem for callerid integration with cqc.
Has anyone tried this with cqc? Does the modem driver install a virtual com port that interfaces with the usb port to access the modem? |
