Default 3.5 years without rebuilding server, a new record ;-)

I managed to go 3.5 years without rebuilding my server. Thats a new record for me

And, I wasn't even planning on rebuilding it, I got a quad core 3.4GHz/16GB RAM machine that I was going to use for SageTV/Plex/etc using a smaller case from a former client machine, then decided that was dumb. (Got the huge specs to see if it could handle on-the-fly transcoding from DVDs/BR to my Roku)

The only thing that i'm concerned about is the RocketRaid 3540 card, took a while to find a mobo that worked with it last time, hopefully this one works.

So you're going to use your quad-core as a master server? Isn't that a bit of overkill? I was thinking of doing similar - upgrading my Atom PC for a beefier box. But if I use a conservative comparison of 21W for my atom (it generally runs at around 17W) versus a 110W for an i5 (my i7 desktop sleeps at 50W, idles around 130W and goes up from there), the i5 running 24x7 will cost me almost $200/year in electricity, versus the atom which runs it at around $35/yr

Congrats :) I just updated mine as well, approaching 3 years now. Needed more expansion slots and storage. How's this for overkill, i7 920, 12GB ram, WHS 2011. Of course it runs the surveillance software for about 10 cameras as well.

oh my, no, not just for CQC. The big need was for seeing if I could transcode DVD/BluRay rips on the fly to a Roku, since SageTV is all but dead. There's a chance I could even transcode them to an Android phone on the fly, but thats not the big need.

It'll also run:
- Plex (this could be the big hog)
- Dropbox
- Google Drive
- Google Music Mgr
- Picasa
- SageTV

ugh, can't recall.

But, like standon, this is such a PITA to do that I opted to just blow out specs.

Right now i'm fighting with Windows 7 to recognize the Lantronix Serial Server. I'm using a different version than I had before, CQC is just sitting at "Wait for Comm Resource" so I need to learn a whole new Lantronix GUI. Yuk.

I bought a Lantronix serial server off ebay a short time ago, and had absolutely no luck making it work with the Lantronix driver. I ended up using this http://pcmicro.com/netserial which has worked like a dream.
