  Distributed Video System ideas?
Posted by: RoyN - 01-23-2006, 08:20 PM - Forum: General Automation - Replies (22)

Hi All,

I am kind of new to these things, although I have been reading the forums for a few months, and have already downloaded and tried CQC...

Basically: I really like CQC's architecture, especially the fact that I can do a web-interface, for example... this is really cool for use on a pocket pc type control or a wireless tablet...

Next problem: I would like to have a 8 - 10 room system. I would like to have several pocketpcs/tablets (one for each room, or maybe shared) to control the equipment/programming in each room. I would also like to have video-on-demand, and audio-on-demand in every location, and also live-tv (satelite) and radio, but I would like the satelite reciever(s) to be in a central location, as opposed to one in each tv...

Basically I guess I would need some sort of server which would stream both the stored video, as well as live tv, or dvds, to whatever room. I am thinking some sort of IP architecture? It would also be controlled through CQC ideally... At the "tv-side" (client) I envision either a wince appliance, or xbox-type-thingy, or even a full pc... I would like HD-quality image, and digital sound.

Any ideas? or am I thinking ahead of our times?

Thanks so much for any help!

  XBOX Media Centre driver
Posted by: znelbok - 01-23-2006, 08:20 PM - Forum: Driver Development - Replies (74)

So I have mention that I use the xbox as a media center wuite a few time. It plays DVD's MP3, DIVX, internet radio etc all on a unit that is relatively cheap.

I posted a message asking if it was possible to interface this to CQC and I now have the http api for it.

Dean can you have a look and tell me how easy a driver would be for this. I am hoping that using the meda management facilities that you have for CQC, we could integrate the xbox with this.

The httpapi document can be found here

A bit of info here

and some more on functions available

  Comments about myhometheaterpc.com
Posted by: IVB - 01-22-2006, 09:29 AM - Forum: User Systems - Replies (33)

This is the new official feedback thread for my personal site http://www.myhometheaterpc.com.

If you're reading this and you came from MyHomeTheaterPC.com, this is a forum for the charmedquark software package, which as you probably know due to the site, is what I use for both the front-end GUI painting, the back-end device control, and the application integration. This is the forum section, check out http://www.charmedquark.com for the package overview and description.

I'm just a customer, not an investor nor employee, so I'll give you the straight truth to any questions you have. If you have a question that may be inappropriate for public display [as CharmedQuark is paying for this site, please be considerate], PM me.

For the regulars: I got told that visitors have been getting confused as the feedback link is going to a random thread on avsforum. I believe guests have the ability to post here now; if they don't then they can join and then post feedback.

While there is a widget for the time that can be used in graphics, is there a field that can be used in actions.

I want to send the time in a SMS message so I want to call it up with $(moniker.field)

Which software video player do you recommend for CQC?
Posted by: joeberg - 01-14-2006, 07:53 AM - Forum: General Automation - Replies (12)

I am curious as to which software player most people would recommend. Before CQC, I used MCE which makes for a great standalone theater manager, but lacks some remote control capabilities and feedback with CQC. I am currently evaluating a both Zoom Player and TheaterTek as a CQC player. These will be used primarily to play movies from the hard drive so I need to be able to pass a file name from a repository.

Based on my research, ZP and TT are the most popular although CQC does support WinDVD and WMP. I like TheaterTek's look and feel (more like an appliance) and I have obtained good results using their built-in Nvidia decoder with ffdshow. However, it lacks true remote control and feedback capabilities that are available with Zoomplayer. I already own a license for the Nvidia Codec which I am going to try with Zoom Player. I feel that I should be able to obtain the same quality picture with ZP+NVidia+ffdshow that I can with TT and the same filters. That would give me a good quality picture with the remote control and feedback I am looking for.

I figured i would post the question here and run a poll to see what everyone else would recommend based on their experiences. Everyone who uses a software player goes through this process, so this might help others decide in the future.

I am looking for:

1. A tightly integrated player that can be seamlessly controlled by CQC. This implies

  • -the ability to launch/exit automatically (moot point with the new app launch driver)
-feedback of current status to CQC
-ability to control all necessary aspects of player
-ability to launch a file from the repository
2. A good quality picture.

Which player do you recommend for use with CQC and why?

online DVD store: DVD Profiler->CQC->Alcohol 120% work
Posted by: Prefect - 01-10-2006, 07:05 PM - Forum: CQC Support - Replies (10)

Through Dean's latest CQC release (1.5.7), I've got DVD Profiler databasing working and pointing at my collection of DVD Images (stored as ISOs on my file server).

I wrote a driver for Alcohol 120% (also works with the cheaper 52% variant)
, which I use to mount the images on a virtual DVD drive. I originally targeted using Daemon Tools, but due to some problems with their command line parsing I couldn't get it to cooperate with CQC.

Clicking any of the covers causes that disc image to be "inserted" into the virtual DVD drive. I have Zoom Player configured to start playing automatically upon insertion of a DVD. One trick is that I used Microsoft TweakUI to shut off autorun for the drive to stop PCFriendly, InterActual, and the other really annoying DVD software from popping up. This doesn't get in the way of Zoom Player detecting the insert event though, so it works out nicely.

Another tip is you can use the Zoom Player bookmarking capability to set a start bookmark. Then when the disc is inserted, it'll always start playing back with the audio, subtitles, and at the position you set (bypassing menus and other junk).

(I don't yet really have a cohesive design for my user interface - I've just been building and tweaking individual pieces, but I haven't put it all together yet. The screen shot is just a test page I threw together.)

  General IR Questions
Posted by: znelbok - 01-08-2006, 05:54 PM - Forum: General Automation - Replies (24)

If am in the process of putting the house together (plan and design stage) and I am trying to sort out how to do the IR.

I am going to have a (eventually) a multiroom system, using the server with at least three zoom player's running at once and a tuner all stacked with the server.

The problem I have is that the server is not located near the theatre, but rather in a custom built 1.8m x 3.5m room for all my servers, routers and electrical gear. This means that any gear in the theatre will not have access to a PC for IR control from wither the new PCi card that has been mentioned or USBirt etc. and I want a tablet for theather control.

I can try and sort out some way of getting the IR over to the theatre if I use something in the server, or the other option that I have seen here is the use of a Globalcache unit.

I have no idea how well they work and how good they are. What are their limitations and are all models supported. I do like the idea of using ethernet instead of sending the IR around the house (probably because I am more familiar with ethernet).

Is there a better way to do it than what I have mentioned or is this it and I will just have to deal with limitations. My aim is to not have a PC at the theatre. I do stream DVD's from the server and will conttinue to use the XBOX (or XBOX 360) or a similar device.

For the grafik Eye it looks to me that I only can control the zones up and down. Is this true?
The main thing I need is to set the scene's, is there someway to do this?

Thanks Rick

  The purpose of this forum
Posted by: Dean Roddey - 01-01-2006, 07:49 PM - Forum: User Systems - No Replies

This forum is for users to show off their systems. Note that we have a gallery section on the web site, but we can't put all user systems there, and are mainly interested in systems that demonstrate some type of architecture not really covered in the other galleries. This section is open for any CQC user to demonstration, discuss, show off, etc... their own systems.

If you want to do this, start a thread for yourself and go for it. We currently won't be hosting any images, so you'll have to provide some place for them to be hosted and just referred to from here.
