I gave a friend of mine my 770 for the evening and he left his first attempt at milling a docking station on my desk the next morning.

I think the front needs to extend down to cover the plug.
Thoughts?

Very nice. But it isn't really a docking station is it? I think it is more correctly discribed as a stand correct? The major difference being the ability to slide the unit in and out without having to manually unplug it.
If I am wrong and the stand is holding the plug precise enough to use as a docking station, then I think we have a winner on our hands. I would be willing to pay for a "docking station" like that.

If you had this working as a docking station I would be interested in getting one also. What about a wall mount one?

.
I don't see the point in making one if it doesn't hold the power connector....

Very Nice!
And the connector is held in a precise enough location that the unit will slide on and connect itself without too much effort? If so, you need to talk to your friend about the chance of producing some (my guess is 4-6 for fellow CQCers) to sell. Then if they are OK with producing a few, get a price for us.

It slides in/out smoothly. I can't really feel the connector when it engages. He's out of town right now, he left it sitting on my desk with a note that the power connector was just pressed in and I should push it out if I needed.
It seems fine the way it is, not sure if it will need some lock or keeper to hold the plug in.
I can probably talk him into doing a half dozen.

I'm interested but I have to agree that they'd look nicer if that plug was hidden.

I think six is an under-estimation. Depending on price, I'd take 1, 2 or 3.

I would be interested as well. Is the angle OK for viewing status on a night stand at a glance?

It works ok for me sitting in my easy chair with the Nokia on the end table.
We have not had a chance to make the second iteration, and we will be on travel for the next two weeks.
Neither of us is really interested in making a bunch of these, so this it what we talked about.
Making them out of cedar or fir which is available in 4x4's and cost effective in our area.
The end user will be responsible for sanding and finishing however they want. (Or use as is)
Cost to be ~$20.
For my part it will only be a one time run. Not sure about my partner.
Does that sound ok?

Or give us a template and some of us will do our own.

Do you want the file he created for the milling machine?

If it's an image, sure. If it's a file that only that machine can read/view, no thanks.

depending on the file type people might be able to upload it an have a batch run at www.emachineshop.com. Order size might be to small but just a thought if people don't want to get in the business of making a bunch of these.

Sorry I have not updated this.
We did a second mod where the front of the docking station runs to the bottom, to hide the cable. It requires some different work after the milling opereration (back drilling and sawing) that I have not done yet.
I also picked up some Cedar stock to see how it looks.
I'll post the mod II as soon as it's finished.

Time flies by.
I tried to complete this about a week ago.
I couldn't make the necessary 4.5" cut with my tablesaw, it won't handle something that size. I'm going to have to try making a jig for my bandsaw and see how that works.

Time to bring in Norm and make a jig. Norm probably already has a "CQC Wall Mount Touch Screen" jig done already.

Here is ModII. It is cut from a 4x4 piece of fir, it was pretty rough. It's just a tester. I picked up a nice looking piece of rough Cedar that should look pretty good after it's planed.
The blue tape is covering a previous milling on the same block of wood. I cut a notch in the bottom to allow the cord to exit out the side, but now that I think about, it probably should run out the back.

It's still on the list, just hovering slightly below some others... (I did pickup a new(to me) bandsaw to help with cutting them though.
