View Full Version : DVD Ripping Software
One thing that I have to really look into is how to rip all of my DVD's to be stroed digitally. What is the best software to use? Should I just wait for 2.0 + the media management stuff?
Thanks,
Wynn

I use a combination of DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. DVD Shrink to rip to ISO and DVD Decrypter to burn or also rip more complicated DVD's. Both are free.

I have to recommend buying AnyDVD. It just works and makes relocating video content from your DVD to hard drive as simple as copy and pasting the VIDEO_TS directory using explorer :-) They seem to update often as new protections come out.
And yes, it can remove all region/css protections and protected user operations and even modify so it starts at the DVD main menu while you do that if you want.

The above software works well, but I use AnyDVD to decrypt and copy all the files from the DVD to my hard drive. AnyDVD doesn't do any re-encoding so you get the original files (and original file sizes) from the DVD without the encryption.
AnyDVD runs in the system tray and decrypts the DVDs on-the-fly so you're not actually interacting with any program when you copy the files. You just open the DVD drive within Windows and copy the files to the destination directory.

If those dont work then DVDFab (the version that costs a little bit) has always worked for me. DVDDecrypter was the best but UK_Lightening was threatened, sued and so on and he stopped updating it :(
DVD Shrink worked pretty good in a very quick test (didn't test quality yet).
What output file do I need so that when I select a movie from my interface, it will just play the movie with no menus or anything?
My quick test ouput all of the .vob files which didn't seem to work out so well.
you need to press the "reauthor" button in DVDShrink, select just the Main Movie, then click "backup".
It'll produce some IFO files and some VOB files. you want to put the video_ts.ifo filepath into DVDProfiler's note field.
(i.e., [ONLINELOCATION="\\PATH\TO\ALADDIN\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO"]

Does AnyDVD work with the new Sony protections (inserting errors on the disk)? Like War of the Worlds, etc.?
DVD Shrink doesn't work on these and DVD Decrypter is hit or miss....

I'm not sure, but I receive updates very often (sometimes once per week) and I've seen stuff about Sony protections in the release notes. I have no idea about any specific protections though. Here are the latest release notes: http://www.slysoft.com/download/changes_anydvd.txt

DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter will not work on those.
DVDFab does not have any problems with any DVDs, I own and rip everything that comes out.

If you just use DVDFab Express and click on movie only, it fits on one DVD so need to shrink.

Folks,
Sorry to do this, but I am going to lock this thread. If you are discussing DVD ripping, please take the discussion elsewhere.
Now if you want to discuss fair use, DRM absurdities, etc. I am all in favor.
